The awful conditions that cattle are kept in on ships

One of the most contentious issues in the animal welfare debate is the transportation of cattle by sea. These animals are often kept in cramped, dirty conditions for long periods of time, leading to extreme stress and suffering.

Cattle are typically transported on large cargo ships, where they are packed tightly together in overcrowded pens. These pens are often filthy, with the animals forced to stand in their own waste for the duration of the journey.

The lack of space and ventilation on these ships can lead to high levels of heat and humidity, causing the cattle to become dehydrated and ill. Many animals do not survive the journey, succumbing to dehydration, heatstroke, or stress-related illnesses.

Furthermore, rough seas and rough handling by ship staff can result in injuries and even death for the cattle. The lack of proper veterinary care on board means that many sick or injured animals go untreated, leading to even more suffering.

Animal welfare organizations and activists have been calling for an end to the live export trade, which sees millions of animals transported by sea each year. They argue that the conditions on these ships are cruel and inhumane, and that animals should not be subjected to such suffering for the sake of profit.

As consumers, we can make a difference by choosing to support companies that do not participate in the live export trade and by advocating for stricter regulations and oversight of the industry. It is time to put an end to the awful conditions that cattle are kept in on ships.
