McCann suspect in German trial for unrelated rape
The main suspect in the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann is currently on trial in Germany for an unrelated rape case.
Christian Brueckner, a 43-year-old German national, has been accused of raping a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005. He is currently serving a prison sentence for drug offenses in Germany and has denied any involvement in the McCann case.
The disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 while on holiday with her family in Portugal has been one of the most high-profile missing person cases in recent history. Brueckner was named as a suspect in the case in June 2020.
The trial in Germany for the unrelated rape case is ongoing, and Brueckner could face additional charges related to the McCann case if further evidence is found.
