Alexei Navalny: What we know about his death
On August 20, 2020, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny fell unconscious on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. He was initially treated at a hospital in Omsk before being transferred to Germany for further medical treatment.
Medical tests conducted by German doctors revealed that Navalny had been poisoned with a nerve agent from the Novichok group. This deadly poison is known to be used by Russian intelligence agencies.
Despite initially being in a coma and on a ventilator, Navalny eventually regained consciousness and began his recovery. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering his assassination, a claim that the Kremlin denies.
Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was immediately arrested and sentenced to prison for violating parole terms from a previous case. His health deteriorated during his time in prison, with reports of him experiencing numbness and loss of sensation in his hands and legs.
Navalny’s supporters and international human rights organizations have raised concerns about his treatment in prison and the lack of proper medical care he is receiving. The Russian government has maintained that Navalny is being treated appropriately.
As of now, the exact circumstances surrounding Alexei Navalny’s death remain unclear. His supporters continue to demand a full and transparent investigation into the events leading up to his poisoning and subsequent imprisonment.
